Animation: Concept Design

The sketch above is for my animation class. I'm creating a bird character. At the beginning of the course i wasn't sure if wanted to go completely realistic or more simplified. I ended up going simple. Less is more right? As a student that has never worked with Maya, i felt like it'd be best if i worked with a character that would be easier to work with. So this semester my goal is to model my character and add texture.
For the digital story boarding course i wasn't sure if i wanted to go with my idea of designing a fly or a snail. However,  after talking with the professor, he suggested that i should go with the snail; the fly was a character that seemed to familiar. Now that i think of it, he's right. When have you ever seen a snail as your main character?
